A few years ago, a friend pointed me to a funny article on MSN (not meant to be funny) about how astronomers were in the top-25 highest paid jobs in the country, which made me laugh. Especially because the "average salary" reported in the article was ludicrous. In reading a fellow astronomer's blog, I found that a similar article had emerged recently, this time on CNN. The article was called "Five Surprising Salaries." Surprising is right! Kurtis has already blogged about this, pointing out what the article missed or may not have taken into account, so I don't want to rehash it. Read his blog, it's interesting.
The short of it is this: the article lists astronomers as having a surprise salary:
"Surprising salary: $95,740. Though maybe it shouldn't be all that surprising considering a doctorate is the standard level of education and there are only 1,700 astronomers in the U.S."
Again, read Kurtis's blog for what they misrepresented (or what we can only assume they misrepresented). Suffice it to say, I'm not making anywhere close to $95,000 a year, nor do I expect to . . . pretty much ever. Just remember, you can't believe everything you read. Even if it is on CNN.

My favorite part is the caption of the article's picture (which is several radio dishes pointed up): "Searching the heavens for stars, planets or black holes can pay very well." (I'd also laugh about the clouds, but I know radio astronomy can be done through clouds.)
