London town

The last 3 days of our adventure were spent in London. London is a much cheaper airport to fly through than most others in Europe, so London it was. However, there was no way I could allow us to go through London and only see the airport. So we stayed a few days over. Our hotel was right by Hyde Park, not far from where Sue and I stayed when we were in London 2 years ago.

Samuel Johnson once said, "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life." There's no denying that there is, as my adviser once said, "infinity things to do in London." Armed with that knowledge, we knew we couldn't see everything. Julia had never been to London, so I wanted to make sure she got a good feel for one of the greatest cities in the world.

We saw the Houses of Parliment.

We went to Mamma Mia! in a theater in Leicester Square. I love ABBA. They had free giant souvenir programs. I left the theater singing. The evening was a success.

I went prepared to buy several scarves. (They are big scarves that can also double as a wrap.) These scarves can be bought in other places too (for example, in the Glasgow train station for 20 pounds ($40) each), but they are so cheap from small tourist shops in London. Especially around Piccadilly Circus. I was expecting to find them for 4 pounds. But we found them for 2.50 pounds!! Wahoo! Needless to say, we bought several, in several colors. (But not all in that picture are mine...just most of them.)

We went on a bus tour and saw many sites...

...like St. Paul's Cathedral (which I love)...

...the London Eye (which I will never understand)...

...Hyde Park (which was a bit greener than the last time I saw it)...

We also went on a river cruise.

We saw the Tower of London...

...and the Tower Bridge...

...and lots of other London-y sights...

...including the Houses of Parliment again.

We went to an organ recital in Westminster Abbey. It was awesome. They played Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" as their final piece. Cool!

We saw Buckingham Palace! That's where the queen lives.

And there was a pretty fountain out front.

We bought honey roasted peanuts from a street vendor. They were unbelievably tasty. When we went back for more the next day, there were no more street vendors and no more peanuts. :(

I ate ice cream in Hyde Park.

And took my picture in a phone booth. (I think doing so is a tourist law when you go to London.)

On our last night in London we saw Wicked! And it was wickedly awesome.

London is amazing! When can I go back?

Sometimes I wonder if our accents are as noticable to people in England as theirs are to us. Whenever I hear an english accent I just want to follow those people around and listen to them. Did you ever notice anyone following you around?

So awesome! Your pictures of London are amazing! You're lucky the sun was out. It likes to hide in Britain. Looks like you had such a fantastic time! I love eating ice cream in Hyde Park too! :-)
