I already blogged about going to Loch Ness. Thursday we took a day trip up to Loch Lomond. We took a boat out on the loch where our tour guide told us it was the largest fresh water loch in Scotland. It's funny because the guide on the tour of Loch Ness said the exact same thing. I realized (and Wikipedia confirmed) that what they
meant was that Loch Lomond is the largest loch by
area, while Loch Ness is the largest by
volume.
Here are some pictures of the Loch. It rained that day. (Hence the ominous clouds.) But it didn't rain when we were there. "No rain" is Scottish for "good weather."

Julia and me on our Loch cruise. (It was cold.)

I couldn't resist this, even though it was less dramatic than that one movie I've never seen.

That mountain that is topped with clouds is the
original Ben Lomond. We thought this cool because, as our guide pointed out, there are a few other mountains in the world called Ben Lomond -- including one in Utah (we cheered), and one in California (who knew). (Ben Lomond in Utah is very near where I am originally from.) But, he was quick to note, this is the original. It would be cool to hike.

Did I mention it was cold?

Loch Lomond is the site of Scotland's first national park. It and the surrounding area is beautiful.

In addition to Lochs, Scotland is famous for castles. And we saw many of them. Here's a brief recap of the ones we saw. (We saw at least one almost every day!) Some are more intact than others.
Urquhart Castle, on the shores of Loch Ness.

Bothwell Castle, very near Mary and Luis's flat (where we stayed).

Stirling Castle, of Braveheart fame (so they tell me).

Bulloch Castle, on the shores of Loch Lomond.

And of course, Edinburgh castle.

In Edinburgh we also found our street....even if it is misspelled. :)

How fitting...a princess and her castles..

The second picture of Stirling Castle reminds me of that scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
1st soldier (leaning over castle wall, just like you): Who goes there?
King Arthur: It is I, Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon, from the castle of Camelot. King of the Britons, defeater of the Saxons, Sovereign of all England!
...
King Arthur: I am, and this is my trusty servant Patsy. We have ridden the length and breadth of the land in search of knights who will join me in my court at Camelot. I must speak with your lord and master.
1st soldier: What? Ridden on a horse?
King Arthur: Yes!
1st soldier: You're using coconuts!
King Arthur: What?
1st soldier: You've got two empty halves of coconut and you're bangin' 'em together.
King Arthur: So? We have ridden since the snows of winter covered this land, through the kingdom of Mercia, through...
1st soldier: Where'd you get the coconuts?
King Arthur: We found them.
1st soldier with a keen interest in birds: Found them? In Mercia? The coconut's tropical!
King Arthur: What do you mean?
1st soldier: Well, this is a temperate zone
King Arthur: The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land?
1st soldier: Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
King Arthur: Not at all. They could be carried.
1st soldier: What? A swallow carrying a coconut?
King Arthur: It could grip it by the husk!
1st soldier: It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.
King Arthur: Well, it doesn't matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?
1st soldier: Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?
King Arthur: Please!
...
Looks like you had so much fun! Im so envious!!

Scotland. I'm very jealous, Liz. I consider Moab an excursion these days. I hope this doesn't ruin our friendship. ;) The pics are beautiful, and you look great!
