The Triathlon...the new dilema

This afternoon I was looking at the website for the Austin Triathlon that I'm currently training for. At the top of the website, in big red letters was the following:

New Sprint Distance event just added!

So...now I'm faced with a decision. Should I do the sprint distance or the Olympic distance? Remember in my post about the triathlon I originally wanted to do a sprint, but it wasn't offered, and I wasn't sure I could do the Olympic distance, but then decided to go for it anyway. Now the sprint is an option. Question is: what do I do?!

I'll be honest. I feel like my fitness level in each of the three sports is good enough that I could probably do the distance for each, back-to-back, tomorrow. That is, I probably wouldn't have to do much in the way of "training" for it. So doing the Olympic distance would be more of a challenge for myself, necessitating the actual "training" I want to do, and would feel like more of an accomplishment upon completion. (Not that I wouldn't feel a sense of accomplishment with the sprint. I definitely would, if for no other reason than having completed a triathlon!)

However, perhaps since it will be my first tri, I ought to take it a bit easier.

The good news is, I don't have to decide tonight. (Good thing because it's late, and if there's one thing I learned from Rebecca it's to never make major life decisions after 10:00. And this definitely qualifies. :) ) What does everyone think?

Hey Elizabeth, it's Derek, Angela's husband. I had a lot of ideas, but wanted to keep it short for this post.

Basically, do you want to race for speed or to finish? I know that most of my races, especially new distances, have been run with the goal of finishing in mind, but I also like to achieve a certain time.

For instance, I am fairly sure that I could finish a half marathon tomorrow, but I know that I'd be very displeased with my time. Still, just crossing the finish line brings a great deal of satisfaction top me.

Anyway, if you think you can handle the Olympic distance, I'd go for it. If I felt ready to tackle a marathon, I probably wouldn't run a half.

Thanks for the thoughts, Derek. Those are good points, some that I hadn't thought of. While I'm mostly racing to finish, I do want to be pleased with my time. I guess I can keep on my training schedule while I continue to decide.

Hmm. Mostly because I'm lazy, I'd do the sprint as a starter before doing the superhard one. But as you recognized, you could easily keep training and see how you're feeling a little closer to the registration deadline. But way to NOT make a major life decision after 10! :)
