My de-junking project tonight was inspired by one of my college roommates, Auburn. Auburn showed amazing foresight on more than one occasion. I remember how she owned an iMac, and I was baffled that it had no floppy drive. "How are you supposed to get files on and off?" I asked incredulously. "The internet," she said. "It's the wave of the future."* I had a hard time believing this (I mean, seriously...no floppy?!), but it turned out to be prophetic.
The occasion that inspired me tonight was also back in college. I remember Auburn bringing all her CDs into the living room and then spending the next few hours taking out each CD and its cover and putting them all into one of those big CD books. (You know, the kind with plastic pages.) After she finished doing that, she threw out ALL THE JEWEL CASES. I thought, "Yikes! But the jewel cases! How can you display your CDs?" Again, Auburn proved to have more foresight than I. But in this case it took me longer to realize the uselessness of jewel cases than it took me to realize that the internet really was the future of file transfer.
I mean, fine, keep your jewel cases if you have a fancy display case. But do I have one of those? No. My CDs have been sitting in a box for at least six years.
Inspired by Auburn's example, I tackled the CD box. It's a heavy box. In fact, I weighed it tonight. It weighed 25 lbs. That's a heavy box to carry all the way to Virginia. (Metaphorically.)
I took the box and spent a few hours taking out CDs and covers and putting them into a CD book, and tossing all the jewel cases into a bag. I filled an entire garbage bag with jewel cases. Anyone need some jewel cases?
The finished CD book weighs 10 lbs. That means I have lightened my moving load by FIFTEEN POUNDS, just by getting rid of these jewel cases. Isn't that the best thing ever?
* Might not have been her actual words. But that was the general gist.**
** Also, I realize this conversation makes me sound really old, but I promise, we did have the internet when this conversation took place. We also had floppy disks. Well, I did anyway.

Next step: realizing you don't need physical cds anymore :). Even if you want the occasional disc to listen to in your car, you can always make a new one! But congratulations on making it to 2004...hehe :).
You're doing great! Donate the cases to an elementary school teacher. There are lots of projects for little kids to do with them.
Good luck with the move!!!!
I finally did the same thing with my CDs in grad school. However, I believe I then kept the rather large box of jewel cases for a good year or two before finally parting ways with it.
I definitely haven't used a floppy since elementary school. Are you really THAT old? jk
I put my CDs and inserts in books back in 2007, but I still have the cases. One day, when I have a home with more than one room, I really want to be able to put them on shelves along with my vinyl (and the handful of cassettes that haven't broken yet). My children will probably be really confused about what generation I am actually from.
One more thing: have I mentioned my love for All That You Can't Leave Behind? I think I have, but it can't hurt to say it again Good choice.
I'm about to do a clear out myself. Starting this afternoon. One room at a time. For how ever long it takes. While baby-proofing the flat. I like de-cluttering. I'm not a hoarder of any kind, so every yr or so I go through our clothes and stuff and get rid of junk. But Luis on the other hand has a hard time parting with anything. He has 3x more clothes that I do. Hmm....
Starting on the bedroom today during the baby's nap! Here's to downsizing!
boo... Viva la jewel casia! Also Via el LP!
Also, there are some weirdos out there who don't even have CD's anymore because their music is all in MP3's... But baby steps to the future, right? Keep up the good work!
HAHAHA!!! Yes, I DO love this post!
So...this is what it feels like to be an inspiration.... I like this feeling. ;-) Haha!
I'm with Amy--this is particularly fun to me because I haven't *SEEN* a CD of mine in yearrrrsssss.... :-D But I haven't had the guts to toss them yet. I had those jacket inserts (is that what they're called?) in that cute little red box for a while before I had the guts to toss THOSE. But I think they're gone now. The cds...? In a box in storage. Maybe next time I have to move I'll have had enough of that big, heavy box. ;) I'm happy for you to be rid of the jewel cases! Finally! Whew!
Also.... I tried to comment a couple posts back, and I don't think my comment made it. (Darn blogger via phone!) But I wanted to pass on what Amy just did with all her old mementos that I thought was a super great idea--she took pictures of them, then got rid of them. YES! Now there's an album on her computer of special things, but they aren't taking up any space. I thought that was an awesome idea! Picture of Plucky...? Good enough?
Anyway. Yes, two comments in one here. Loved your post! Love your project! Keep it up! :-D Ah...so liberating.... ;)
